The Palettes of Homestuck sprites (discussion thread)

A thread discussing a thread listing the colours used in official standard style HS sprites.

Actual information on palletes Here

If you happen to notice any misinformation, or believe something may be misconstrued, feel free to point it out/bring it up in this thread or PM me.

Note: Sprites used as visual reference may not be 100% accurate. Dirk and god tier Sollux sprites edited together by [myself]. Images used from the MSPA wiki: All PNGs (of Homestuck Sprites), Jasprosesprite2, Davepetasprite2, Jade's Dreambot & Dreamself, Consort gifs. Images used from patreon archive: Rosebot and Terezi (hs2)

1 1/2 Note: Sections labeled (estimated) are based on sprites that are close to the right colours but only slightly discoloured, sections labelled under this may not be 100% accurate.

2nd Note: Due to the nature of the sprites of Damara, Latula, and Cronus; being that the only sprites I've been able to find are slightly discoloured in the horns (Damara) and fully discoloured in skin and horns (Latula and Cronus), determining the actual colour palette of the rest of the sprites is inherently improbable, they have been labelled "sort of" only for Completion's sake and for separating what parts of the sprites don't actually match in colour (it's weird I know, but until I can 1: Find a sprite of any other character that may have the same discolouration or B: Find sprites of them that aren't discoloured, it will temporarily be like this)

Thanks senpai, services like this are something the fandom should have had a long while ago, so it's really good to get them now when they are heavily overdue

Should I bother sending it to you again in PNG or should I just tell you what program I use?

Generally I have been using .bmp or .tiff/tif to conserve colours, just using an online converter to convert to .gif and to answer the question: sure if you want, I won't tell you how to live your life

image notes: I am the source of the static GIFs, they will almost always be accurate with their colours

John's hair notes: it's accurate I checked. there's ~10(?) different shades of yellow, I'm not listing them all (at least not anytime soon).

Not sure if I should attempt to get HS^2 sprite pallets on here yet (or even how to fit them in, whether intertwined with the Homestuck sprites or separate) and whether or not this thread should be on this list or not. Thoughts?

I think this thread has a place on the masterlist! As for the HS^2 sprites, I don't know if there's a significant enough change in color palettes to justify making them part of this palette list.

I'll mark it (HS^2) down as a do at a later date/long term goal then. As for the master list, not sure how to go about getting that one done :what:

This looks good! I was working on something like this briefly myself, but got distracted. 8^y
I would note that it's a bit hard to read in its current form. Maybe a table, or just some more line breaks and headings?

Anyway, I added a link to the masterlist.

As it says at the top of the post, I am always open to improvements. because i do know how messy/hard to read it is, but this was the best that I, working by myself, could come up with (i.e far from ideal) :insolent:

Experimenting with the layout. John's revised section is the proposed new layout. Better, awful, ugly, do something better with your life :cal: , or acceptable?

john's layout is definitely an improvement. you could probably arrange the individual colours vertically rather than horizontally now that they're in spoilers, it'd be much easier to read

Within the spoilers, you could also format it as a nested list if that's possible with BBCode. You might also be able to color the text for each individual color hex code, but that would take a while and I can understand if it's slow going.

guess it's a good thing i already started formatting all the others like the new layout :insolent:

doing a list would result in this↓
Jhon Egbutt
Show
Image
  • colour 1
  • colour 2
  • colour 3
  • colour 4
  • colour 5
horizontal results in this↓
Wind Sock
Show
Image
colour 1
colour 2
colour 3
colour 4
colour 5
do either of those seem acceptable?

Formatting it with the colours would make it unreadable for certain parts like Yellow and [White] so it would not be likely I do that with everything, maybe some things if i feel a certain clarification needs to be there

honestly doing that would be (by comparison) the quickest part of this whole thing :insolent:

Is this a suggestion to improve the old format or the new format (currently used in human's and troll's section but being applied to everyone)?

Both; neither are using line breaks at the moment.

Attachments related to the topic, not the question of formatting.

alright, if it is a cramped list I'll space it out, but if it has like one or two lines i wouldn't see the point

(cut off to save space)
I couldn't seem to get line breaks to work [br] [/br]
so I tried a revision to john's Jr Lab Suit section to see if making custom spacing for each section is acceptable.

Transferred all the information posted here to a new thread. While this one will stay open for questions and suggestions about the layout, the new one is for the colours only and is NOT to be responded to by anyone except for me. I hope this is a completely understandable thing for me to do, and doesn't seem too far off the deep end.
